BEAUTY SLEEP

I know what it is like to go a couple days without the ‘recommended’ hours of sleep and it is NOT pretty. The sluggish slow feeling and raccoon eyes are and have never been the rage.

Beauty sleep is a REAL THING though, according to a Swedish experiment. This experiment wanted to know how strangers would rate a person depending on the recommended hours of sleep vs. whether they look less healthy and approachable when they had tired faces (because of fewer hours sleep).

What Happened During The Experiment

 

The First Week- The researchers asked 25 university students (some male and some females) to be guinea pigs in their sleep experiment and if accepted were paid to participate. They were all given a kit that measured their nighttime movements to check if no cheating was detected and checked if they slept when they should not have.

They were also told they needed to get a good nights sleep for two consecutive nights.

The Second Week- They were asked to restrict the hours and only sleep four hours for two consecutive nights.

The researchers took free of make-up photos of each student after BOTH the good and bad sleep session.

Next they gathered 122 strangers, women and men in Stockholm, Sweden’s capital city; to have a look at the photos. They rated them on attractiveness, health, sleepiness and trustworthiness as well as also asking, “How much would you like to socialize with this person in the future?”

The strangers took a careful look at the photos and were great at judging who were tired, and if were founded to be sleepy, their score of attractiveness suffered.

  1. Hello Brendaliz, I like when you put the experiment of comparison, while people did not get enough of sleep, and how faces changed before and after the experiment. Because it proved human need to sleep enough and if not, do need something to help your sleeping quality. About the experiment, do you have any datas to support what you written, like the website and pictures?
